How Not to Write a Business Book

While it would take a much longer article to describe all of the things I tried that didn’t work in writing a book, it’s worth noting some of the many mistakes I made that others might see as opportunities to make faster progress.

Hopefully, others will avoid these pitfalls in similar projects. Here’s an example: Many public speakers will tell you that you can simply dictate 10 hours worth of material onto a tape and then hire a writer for very little money who will turn that material into a finished book. Perhaps that’s the case if your message is about your humble beginnings and how positive thinking made you a success.

I tried that approach for several book ideas. In each case, I found an intelligent, hard-working person who wrote much better than I do. I armed the writers with an outline for a book and invited the writers to interview me until he or she had enough material. We recorded those interviews and had them transcribed. The writers even got a floppy disk of the transcribed material so they could simply edit the interviews if that was enough for them.

M talented collaborators did their best. They worked hard. They wrote lots of material. They asked lots of good questions. But they could not produce manuscripts that captured the essence of what we wanted to describe. I devoted long and painful hours to the process, and these collaborations just didn’t work. It became obvious that I could write the material faster than I could explain it to someone else who would then do the writing.

When people first learn about the project to accelerate all forms of improvements by 20 times, they often have a reaction like Peter Drucker’s: Some smart CEO will want to take this perspective and gain enormous advantages by permeating his or her company with these practices.

I spent many years writing to CEOs who had such reputations, visiting CEOs we knew who had that orientation, and making presentations to senior officer groups. I remember one such visit when I felt very confident that we would get the go ahead.

To ease matters, I offered to do the work for no fee. That offer only gained me the reaction that each person in the room would rather go home five minutes earlier every night than spend even five minutes on learning and employing the problem-solving practices we had created.

Why? I’m sure the answer varied from organization to organization that turned us down. Our general impression was that people were overworked and fearful of losing their jobs. The continual downsizing of American organizations had been going on for some time, and there weren’t many people left who did anything other than run from fighting one fire to putting out another one.

A little known fact was that many of the executives who had great reputations for installing new ideas were mostly doing so after these ideas had been around for 20 or 30 years. In addition, executive pay had reached the moon. Due to a combination of more emphasis on stock options and larger performance bonus opportunities, a senior management group could earn more in five years than a similar group would have earned in a lifetime two decades earlier.

Most executives didn’t plan to stick around any longer than it took to cash out with their big payday. Something like this project required people who wanted to enjoy improvements for many years to come.

Marketing-oriented people will tell you that you can sell any idea to the media. Just write press releases; follow up with writers, editors, and producers; and you will be overwhelmed with demand for your idea. That wasn’t my experience. Fearing that we had gone about it in the wrong way, we sought help in pursuing this path.

Marketers of ideas seemed underwhelmed by our project. One organization is considered to be unbeatable in this area. I spent months making daily telephone calls trying to get someone to speak with us. Finally, a sales representative from that organization called me back to say that they were very busy but that the CEO of the organization had agreed to discuss the project for 15 minutes by telephone three months in the future. Okay.

On the appointed day, there was a snowstorm in the CEO’s town. The CEO didn’t make it to the office in time for our scheduled call. I tried for the next six months to reschedule. O never got another slot. And that was one of the more promising leads I had for marketing and writing help.

One would think doing online data entry work would be a simple job that almost anyone could do. Many data entry workers in demand are skilled typists, however others may seek these positions as well. The ones that ask for a fee are most likely going to show you where to go to find companies that do legitimately pay home data entry workers as well as training you on how to do the work. This is what the fee is usually for.

These programs can be excellent for beginners and will usually show you how you can earn even more than you ever could working directly for an employer. They will save you researching time and provide you with the necessary training to succeed.

Alway’s remember though to be careful, when doing your research on these data entry programs. Be sure to read the company’s “About Us” and/or “Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)” page. These pages should outline the program, how it works, what their requirements are, and how they pay. This will help you determine if the opportunity is for you or not.

For example, you get a call from a seller that has a $100k house, they owe $95k, they’re current on payments and there’s no circumstances that force them to move very soon. This call can simply be deleted from your email inbox and you never have to spend any time on it. WOW! What a time saver.

Say this same person calls your ad but instead of the call going to an answering service or call capture number with a detailed script, they call your cell phone and leave a message. Then you have to spend time returning the call, building rapport, getting them to like and trust you and then you find out that you can’t buy their house. What a waste of time and effort. Now multiply this times ten to twenty calls a week.

Although my last venture did enjoy a highly successful NASDQ IPO in just nine months and Murray’s last company closed $75 million in revenues in just a year, those results are not typical and come around once in blue moon - and Murray and I both had built many businesses prior to those two particular successes.

So the primary key to being successful is having the right information in the right order… and backed by the right action plan. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, what type of business you have, what resources are available, or how much skill or experience you have. Having the right information in the right order is the way to start.

You must follow these three steps to build a million dollar business:

1. Obtain VISION through Diagnostics. You must understand exactly where you are and exactly where you are going what business tools you have mastered, and which tools you need to master or find, before moving to the second step. Without vision it is hard to get yourself and others excited. Choose a vision that will stir your passion and your soul.

2. Get FOCUSED through Planning. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and clearly define your target customer, products, and market. Then focus on exactly what you need for business growth and plan accordingly. Working off a plan is so much easier than winging it day in day out. Your company has to become a marketing and selling machine in order to make the millions you want.

3. Take ACTION through Implementation. With the clarity and insights from the first two steps, you are prepared to take the necessary actions to increase your revenues and profits. Now you can move forward and implement the plan you have created. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals for yourself and be sure to set up the systems you need, in order to make the goals a reality.

With those three steps come three of the most important questions that you must ask yourself every single day:

1. How do I make more profit from existing sales?
2. How do I get more sales from existing clients?
3. How do I attract more clients?

Concentrate on these three questions every day, take the actions that your answers point to, and watch your business grow!

In a recent study, five thousand successful businesspeople were interviewed to see what traits, characteristics or attributes they shared. Not surprisingly, they varied enormously. Successful people come in all imaginable shapes, sizes, backgrounds, histories, skills sets, and personalities. There is no single “entrepreneurial type.” This was as varied and colorful a group of humanity as one could imagine. But the researchers did find one trait in common: all the subjects had an intense passion for what they were doing.

There is a difference between being committed to your success and being interested in your success. If you are interested, you will do what’s convenient. If you are committed, you will do whatever it takes - and doing whatever it takes is what you need to succeed in business, no matter who or where you are. It’s no longer possible (if it ever was) to get by with a half-hearted approach.

“Yes,” you might say, “but let’s keep this in perspective. I mean, it’s not like we’re trying to change the world here, right?”

Actually, it’s exactly like that. The truth is, successful businesspeople are driven by the idea of changing the world around them. They want to leave their imprint.

Of course, part of that passion is financial. When you’re in business, it’s natural to focus on money. Money, after all, is the medium of business; it’s how you measure the relative success of what youre doing. But here is something that too many businesspeople never realize and are never taught: it’s difficult to be genuinely passionate about money, because money has no intrinsic character.

There are two types of income. One is monetary income, and it’s great to have the comfortable or even luxurious lifestyle it can provide. But in order to be genuinely happy and fulfilled, to be truly successful, you also need a healthy flow of psychic incomee. Psychic income is the feeling that comes from the sense that your contribution matters, that you are making a positive difference in the world. There is no better feeling than knowing your life and your business have purpose and meaning. This is the ultimate goal of a successful business.

It doesn’t matter whether your business is a multinational nonprofit that feeds, clothes and shelters hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged people, a printing company that makes brochures and signs, or an auto body shop that serves your neighborhood. We’ve seen people who are responsible for putting a little plastic piece on the end of a shoelace be passionate about what they do - because they can visualize the safely tied shoes of children, athletes, students, fire fighters, hospital workers, the elderly . . . they can see their shoelaces having an impact on the world. From coffee shops to software giants, any business can make a contribution to other people’s lives. Every time either of us has been a part of creating or building any business, for us that business has been like working on a cure for cancer. Successful businesspeople truly do want to change the world.

The United States today is buried under a staggering mountain of debt - trillions of dollars worth. How will this country ever be able to get out from under? There is one and only one way that will ever happen: through the efforts of creative and passionate people building the businesses of their dreams.

The planet’s ecology is also facing some serious threats right now. How will we ever be able to solve our worldwide energy needs without ruining the planet in the process? There is one and only one way: through the ingenuity and passion of entrepreneurs.

People like you don’t just want to change the world: you are changing the world. This group of people is going to rewrite the future. It’s not about governments, corporations and organizations anymore. In the twenty-first century, it’s the individual man and woman passionately in pursuit of their business dreams who will have a positive, transformative impact on everyone’s lives.

Do Not Be Afraid to Start a Home Business Anyone Can Succeed

I truly believe there has never been a better and more exciting time to work from home as there presently exists. The Internet has opened a new and exciting chapter to working from home, & it is available to everyone. From school children to grand parents with no barriers from sex, race, color, creed or religion. Both men & women can compete on equal terms for pay & without any barriers. In fact some of these opportunities may offer even better chances & rewards for women, so come on ladies why not give it a look.

The present climate in the world is one of fear, recession, job uncertainty & ever increasing debt and rising prices. Each day our fuel & utility bills rise higher along with food and basic commodities. No one has a safe job anymore & businesses word wide are downsizing.

So what’s the alternative & where can we find the comfort of job security? I believe the answer lies at your very own doorstep. OK it may not appeal to everyone but it is probably the biggest opportunity that most of us can take right here & now. It has the potential to give you a lifetime of security that you may never get in a job, with rewards that many people could never imagine or believe.

The problem with a job is you never really get paid your real worth, & no matter how well you serve your boss each week you rarely get paid more unless you work longer hours. However the Internet can offer a true leveraged income, if you are not familiar with this term it simply means that you get paid for not only your efforts & work but also from the efforts and work of others.

The great thing about some of these businesses is that you get paid even when you are not working, for example when you are asleep or on holiday! Some other great things about working from home and being self employed are you answer only to yourself, you get to work where & when you want. You can run your business around your family and social life & you only have to ask yourself for time off.

There are also many financial advantages that it has to offer. Some of these include income tax relief on the cost of many items for example, a portion of your utility bills to cover your home office, & some of the expenses of running your car. Don’t worry about these things most accountants will give you a free initial sitting to point you in the right direction. Also most local tax offices will supply you with all the information you need for free. In your early days you may not need an accountant,

(Tip) Keep a separate bank account for your business. Keep all your receipts & keep them in a date order & in a month by month folder. it will save a lot of time and heartache trust me.

Keep accurate records of income and expense in date order, you can use one book with income on one page & expense on the opposite facing page, always try to keep a separate set of pages for each month with room at the bottom for monthly totals. (Tip) golden rule, update your book keeping on at least a weekly basis

OK this sounds great, so whats the down side? Well it is still a business & you will need to treat it as one. You will need to do work on a consistent & regular basis and it is important that you treat it as going to work & not a hobby. It’s a really good idea to set aside a set number of hours you would ideally and realistically like to work each day, they can be as flexible as you like, however you do need to make a habit of working. I would recommend a minimum of two hours each day.

Providing you follow the above you will succeed, the only difference being the more hours you work the quicker you will see a return on your efforts. Don’t treat it like a race, it’s not a race its a journey and should be enjoyed as one, when done properly it will reward you greatly with freedom, time & finance.

I have tried many things over the last 35 years & ran several small businesses, however none of them compare to my current business & the rewards that it gives me.

My only regret is that I never realized that these opportunities were out there and within the reach of an ordinary person like me from a poor background.

I believe that the best opportunities are in Internet marketing & that they are without a doubt some of the most rewarding & exciting businesses that are currently available to everyone almost without exception.

Lastly it is important that you find a business that is honest, ethical & with a sound foundation.

(Tip) Here are some of the most absolute & important criteria you must look for in any business.

The company must a provide a full and free training pro gramme that you can follow, preferably with lots of video tutorials.

The company should have an email helpline, & offer personal 1 to 1 training, along with daily updates, web calls & training.

A personal mentor with his or her personal phone number, and a team of experts on hand to give you the back up that you will need in your early days.
